Michael was born in St. Louis, Missouri but moved to the greater Springfield, Mass area when he was 5. As a young child, some of Michael's favorite memories were going to the local u-pick farm and peeking into the greenhouses, checking out the flowers, and picking strawberries and blueberries. Michael's family also had a small garden in which he started growing cucumbers, carrots, and summer squash.
In 1999, Michael's family moved to the current Kilpatrick Family Farm in Middle Granville. They wanted land to have chickens and a bigger garden, and wanted out of the corporate, suburban lifestyle. Michael's dad found a job in Pawlet, VT, and they were able to find some land in Middle Granville, where the family started gardening, and Michael started raising and hatching ducks and chickens. By 2002, the garden and chickens were producing more than the family could use, and Michael and his brother, Philip, decided to explore the local farmer's Market.
In 2004, with encouragement from another local grower, the brothers started attending the Glens Falls Farmer's Market and growing on a much bigger scale. The Glens Falls market was their first good market, and they realized "we really could make a business out of it". That fall, the two brothers put up their first greenhouse, which was the first of many others (now over 14,000 sq ft). Since then, the farm has grown to include over 100 acres of rented and leased land, 4 farmer's markets a week, year-round production in the multiple high-tunnels, and a summer crew of 6 full-time people.
Originally, Michael began farming as a way to make money during the summer. Now, Michael says, "It is more of a love of being outdoors, of working closely with nature and the great people in our crew. It is about providing the best food possible for our great, loyal customers year round".
